      <image:title>Blog - Winter Lettuce - Day 24 - The root structure is developing as well. It is far more dense than it was when it graduated to the bigger pot. No doubt this will continue until the pot is full of roots. You can see that we’ve filled the 1 litre pot a little over half full. This is to encourage the roots to grow down and also to allow the top of the roots to have air around them. You don’t want to put too much water in the pot as access to air is important.</image:title>

      <image:title>Blog - Winter Lettuce - 22 (Graduation Day) - That’s much better!</image:title>
      <image:caption>Hydroponics doesn’t need to be complicated or rely on expensive equipment. Results can be achieved with simple solutions. So this is just a used 1 litre plastic ice cream carton. With a pair of scissors, we carefully cut a hole out of the lid so that the mesh pot would fit in. When selecting a pot or tub to put a plant in, ensure that the plastic doesn’t let light in. That way the water will stay clear and free from algae. This 1 litre pot will probably be fine for this lettuce all the way up to harvest. It should reach 15cm in height. I guess we’ll have to wait an see how it gets on.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Winter Lettuce - 22 (Graduation Day) - One of the great advantages of hydroponics is that you get to see what’s happening to the roots as well as the leaves. Sometimes when not much seems to be happening, there’s loads going on with the root structure. Here we see that the roots are working their way through the perlite and out of the mesh pot. As they begin to spread out throughout the nutrient, we’ll see the plant develop even quicker.</image:title>

      <image:title>Blog - Winter Lettuce - Day 21 - We’re now at the end of week 3 of the winter lettuce trial. As discussed in the earlier posts, we’re demonstrating how simple a system can be used for hydroponics growing. There are of course lots of things that can be improved upon and hence get better results. In the background you' can see a tin foil ‘wall’ that we’ve placed around the tray. This is to reflect the light around the grow area so that the plants grow more evenly and don’t grow so much towards the light. Another simple improvement is to ensure that no light reaches the nutrient water. If you allow light to reach the nutrient rich water then more often than not Algae will grow. In this set-up we are changing the water weekly to keep this under control but a piece of card of similar with holes for the pots cut into it would do just fine.</image:title>

      <image:title>Blog - The Winter Lettuce Story - Day 18 - We thought it was about time to have a better look at the setup we’ve got. As said before we’re showing how simple a system can be to grow plants with hydroponics. A tray, some mesh pots, seeds and a light, next to no equipment. The last ingredient being the nutrients. We use our own Hydrofeed Complete nutrient which contains everything these lettuce need. We sell it in our shop and highly recommend it.</image:title>
      <image:caption>We have a simple mechanical timer and an LED grow light. We’ve rigged up a means of holding the light at a set height using pieces of old copper pipe. We can show you the design in another post. On the right hand side and front left we have “Salad Leaves Speedy Mix” growing. All planted at the same time the one at the back right is a monster!. At the back left we have a chilli pepper. It’s called “Spangles Twilight” and is just emerging. It takes a bit longer to germinate than the lettuce but we’re excited to see how it develops (you can find it in our shop if you want to try it as well)</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Winter Lettuce - Day 17 - WOW masses of growth overnight. It’s really starting to fill out the pot. we can’t believe how vigorous this winter lettuce is.</image:title>
      <image:caption>You may have noticed yesterday that the nutrient batch was starting to show it’s age and could do with refreshing with a new batch. We were seeing some green algae growth because the light is reaching the nutrient. Ideally you would use a grow system which excludes all light from the water which solves this issue. A quick check with a pH meter confirms that the pH has risen. We can either add some pH- (we use citric acid here at Home of Hydroponics as it’s safe to use and gentle on the plants). Alternatively we can refresh the nutrient with a new batch (which is what we did this time). Nice clear water at the right EC and PH = happy plants.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Day 16 - Another day another big change. This is day 16 and the winter lettuce is really accelerating in growth.</image:title>
      <image:caption>The roots are now making their way out of the pot and into the tray to make the most of the nutrients available to them. In this setup we aren’t using any sort of aeration or pumping. The surface area of the water keeps it fairly aerated and changing the water every week to keep it fresh is all that’s needed.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>So 24 hours later and we see the 3rd and 4th leaf have more than doubled in size. Practically growing in front of our eyes. As is normal we see a bit more green on the perlite. This is to be expected when there’s nutrients and light. It doesn’t cause any damage to the plants and at this amount doesn’t influence the pH of the nutrients particularly.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>At this stage of growth, the roots are just establishing into the Perlite and may not be fully reaching the nutrient bath. So a bit of nutrient dripped from above with a pipette is all that’s needed to encourage it along.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Winter Lettuce - Day 12 - So we’re now on day twelve of testing our new winter lettuce seeds. (the latest addition to our shop). These have all germinated so well and are putting down lots of roots.</image:title>
      <image:caption>We're using as simple a grow system as possible to show how easy it can be. All we’re using is a tray to hold the nutrient (Hydrofeed Complete) and some mesh pots, to hold some perlite, which we germinated the seeds in. We planted one seed in the middle of the pot so it’ll have plenty of room to grow. For lighting we’re using an LED bulb about 30cm from the plant.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Environmental Responsibility - Use less water</image:title>
      <image:caption>Hydroponics wastes far less water than when we are growing in soil. Plants grown hydroponically can use only 10% of the water compared to field-grown ones. Due to global warming, water shortages are likely to become more common in the future.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ef361068aca305d39b2a920/1601164038381-Y5CYGDDPJ4EIQGWTG64Z/pesticides.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Environmental Responsibility - No Pesticides</image:title>
      <image:caption>By growing indoors and not introducing pests through the soil, there are far fewer bugs on our plants. As a result we now no-longer need to use so many pesticides that harm our wildlife, pollute our water and environment.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ef361068aca305d39b2a920/1601120354774-PFLNANJU1FY9MS9PHO5B/Compost.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Environmental Responsibility - No soil</image:title>
      <image:caption>Composting is a great way to recycle but can be damaging to the environment if not from a renewable source and produced locally. Transporting heavy compost is not great for the environment. With hydroponics you can re-use your grow medium or you can go without any!</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ef361068aca305d39b2a920/1601120388256-9P8CVYO0WVM5LZG63L38/Market.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Environmental Responsibility - Grow locally</image:title>
      <image:caption>Much of our food is grown a long way away from where it is eaten, often from overseas. Grown in large intensive farms, picked, packed and sent to the supermarkets many miles away. The energy to transport food from afar is bad for our environment. Hydroponics allows us to grow food anywhere we like, for example in our towns and cities. Grown locally means our food is fresher, tastes great and is better for us and the environment. Try it yourself, you’ll find that lettuce leaves grown at home will keep for far longer once picked as well.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>1. If using a pot for the inner part of your set-up, poke some holes with a pen, scissors or other sharp object. This lets the nutrients get to the new roots and allows the root to grow out as the plant grows. If you’re doing this with young children or are particularly accident prone, we suggest a responsible adult does this bit.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>3. Put the seed(s) you’re planning to use in the medium. You can put a few seeds in, and thin these out if multiple seeds germinate. You can see a salad leaves seed in the middle of the perlite medium.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Try putting a selection of different substances in each glass, to test their pH. You can try this with any liquid or any powder than dissolves in water. A lower pH will change the colour to pink then red, a higher pH will turn the mixture blue. A very high pH would turn the mixture green then yellow. We used: Vinegar (acidic) Lemon juice (acidic) Nothing added (red cabbage) Sodium bicarbonate/ baking soda (alkaline) We tested each mixture with our pH meter, so we’ve labelled each experiment with the measured pH.</image:caption>
